Body stretch marks, also known as striae within the dermatology field, are a type of scarring on the surface of the skin. Stretch marks can occur when the skin is stretched due to issues such as weight gain during pregnancy, or adolescent puberty. On the surface, stretch marks can appear as purple or reddish lines that fade to a lighter color.
The occurrence of stretch marks is usually in areas where large amounts of fat are stored. The abdomen is a common troublesome area, as well as the buttocks, or on and in-between the breasts. You may also find them on the upper part of the arms or legs. The best cure for stretch marks is prevention, but once you have them it is possible to use various creams, and other procedures to help eliminate them.
Stretch Mark Prevention
Prevention is key when it comes to warding off stretch marks. First and foremost is a healthy and nutritious diet. This includes drinking plenty of water to keep the skin soft and less likely to produce marks on the skin. Try to lower your caffeine intake or avoid it altogether. If you do drink coffee or tea then balance it with water. If your diet lacks the necessary vitamins then this may result in unwanted stretch marks as well. A diet rich in vitamins A and C that include oranges, carrots and milk; foods that contain zinc such as fish and nuts; and high protein foods such as eggs can all promote good skin health.
Stretch Mark Lotion
Lotion for stretch marks is readily available and it is advisable to ask your doctor to recommend the right lotion for you. It is also important to talk to your family physician in regards to stretch marks during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor well before your pregnancy begins to stop any stretch marks from actually developing. This will allow time for preventive treatment to begin at the early stages of your pregnancy.
